How to Store Food Safely in Bear Country: Top 5 Tips
Share
In bear country, safe food storage protects both campers and wildlife. Before your trip, check the food storage rules for your specific park or campground. Some places require an approved bear-resistant container.
1. Use the required storage method
Use a provided food locker or an approved bear-resistant canister when required. Keep it fully closed whenever you are not taking something out.
2. Store more than just food
Put trash, toiletries, sunscreen, pet food, and other scented items in secure storage too. Never keep them in your tent.
3. Keep storage away from your sleeping area
Place your canister on level ground away from your tent, following the distance required at your destination. Avoid cliffs and water, where a bear could roll it out of reach.
4. Cook and eat away from your tent
Choose a separate area for preparing and eating meals. Clean cookware promptly, and store leftovers as soon as you finish.
5. Secure everything before bed
Check your table, pockets, and cooking area for snacks or wrappers. Put all scented items and trash into approved storage for the night.
Quick reminder: Food storage rules vary by location. Check the rules for your campsite before packing.
